Last week I was fortunate enough to spend the afternoon in Portland, Maine.

Last week I was fortunate enough to spend the afternoon in Portland, Maine. Over a simple lunch at The Crooked Mile overlooking the dolphins in front of the Regency Hotel, I read an article on the front page of the Portland Press Herald entitled “A Second Course of Food Glory.” The article talks about a number of the new eateries in Portland, which was recently named “the foodiest small town in America” by the New York Times.

The place mentioned which intrigued me the most was Paciarino, a newer restaurant on Fore Street opened recently by a husband and wife from Milan, Italy. I stopped in after lunch to savor the atmosphere and was warmly greeted. Reason enough to return soon!

Not much more than a block away on Commercial Street is Nine Stones, a superb spa for a massage. The prints of the light house at different times of day and different times of year in the reception area are worthy of notice upon entering.

I looked for but did not find The Movies on Exchange, a great old single screen movie theatre. Look for them at The Portland Museum of Art and under the new name The Movies at the Museum. Also lost on Exchange Place is Books, Etc. Not finding the store was like losing a good friend. I did find my way to Longfellow Books on Monument Square.

No trip to Portland is complete without a long stop at Arabica, an inviting cafe that moved up its current corner location last year as I recall.

Driving back home to Cambridge, I was struck by all that Portland has to offer and what a treat it is to visit there. It’s just over a couple of hours by car from Harvard Square.
