If you are considering buying or selling a home near Harvard University, I would be delighted to be of assistance. I am a Harvard graduate, Cambridge resident and a top broker in Cambridge since 1999. I can be reached at ccherney@hammondre.com or at 617-733-8937.

Over the last ten years I have greatly enjoyed assisting Harvard professors, Harvard students and fellow Harvard alums with buying and selling in Cambridge. I have enjoyed working with Harvardians and their families at Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, The Kennedy School, Harvard College and at the Harvard graduate schools – all Harvard connections are welcome! Always a pleasure to work with members of the Harvard family – past, present and future!

One Harvard professor I worked with writes the following: “Charles Cherney was consummately professional in his work with us. He kept us regularly informed about possible properties as we searched for just the right house. It was a pleasure to work with him throughout the process and he has our strong recommendation for anyone seeking a principled, knowledgeable, efficient and client-orientated real estate professional.”

Though it has been a buzzed-about trend these past few years, the concept of buying and eating locally grown foods is nothing new to Cambridge, Massachusetts residents and businesses. Whether you’re new to the slow food movement or an old pro, visit one of these Cambridge restaurants to see how fresh and delicious locally grown food tastes.

On August 1st, the software giant signed a long-term, 113,000 square foot lease for the expansion of its New England Research & Development (NERD) Center. The expansion will bring a number of jobs to Cambridge, as the Microsoft office has grown its 250 employees to over 1,000 in the past five years.

Sanofi-Aventis, the world’s third largest pharmaceutical company, has also signed a long-term lease for a Cambridge office that is double the size of its current space. The $65 million dollar cancer research expansion will create 300 jobs.

The majority of residential streets in Cambridge and Somerville are marked Parking by Permit Only, thereby limiting parking to residents of each town.

Please note that these parking restrictions are not in effect on Sundays. This makes it much easier for open house visitors from out of town to park near properties they are visiting.

Many of my buyer clients over the years have preferred to meet me at Hammond Real Estate in Harvard Square so that we can travel together in my car to visit properties of interest. Hammond Real Estate offers free parking (to clients visiting with me at Hammond) at the University Place Parking Garage in Harvard Square.

Cambridge Local First is an organization of 250+ locally-owned independent businesses in the city of Cambridge which have banded together to promote and support Cambridge.

To browse through the Cambridge Local First market directory is to be reminded of the many wonderful independent businesses to be found in Cambridge.

For example, the Seven Stars Bookstore on Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square is the kind of place that makes Cambridge special. Usually you will find Phillip and/or Stuart at the helm. I always gravitate to the Buddhism section. A mix of new and used titles. Very strong collection. Always something on the shelf you didn’t find last time. And good conversation with one of the proprietors or other store visitors comes naturally. There is peace and quiet on tap, too, for the browser who prefers to sit down and engage with a book. The high ceilings and large windows at the front and back of the store make it a nice place to be.

No popcorn in this movie theatre - a temple for great cinema.

The other great place to see a movie in Cambridge is at the Harvard Film Archive, located in the Carpenter Center. “This, Le Corbusier’s only major building in the United States—designed to house classes in architecture, film, and other arts—” (Sylvia Hart Wright). No popcorn at these screenings. Truly, a temple to great cinema. I have so many great memories seeing films here over the years. “Blow-Up” stands out in my mind as I fondly think back on the many nights spent here. It is life-affirming to arrive for an obscure foreign film showing at 9 pm and find 40 or 50 others have also made the pilgrimage. Always a treat!

Did you know that census data indicates that over 11,000 children age 14 and younger live in Cambridge?

You will see a few more Cambridge kids these days playing at the newly renovated playground on the Cambridge Common, adjacent to Waterhouse Street and just outside of Harvard Square. The playground is one of fifty playgrounds in Cambridge built for the enjoyment of younger children.

The Cambridge Common playground – known as the
Alexander Kemp Playground – features a rubberized hill surface covered with sand, water play tables, and a sailboat for make-believe adventures. Renovations cost more than $500,000.

It sure is nice to see so many well maintained playgrounds throughout Cambridge. Pleasant playgrounds and parks are an essential aspect of urban life.

There is a new coffee table book out on Harvard Square entitled Harvard Square, An Illustrated History Since 1950. This is author Mo Lotman's first book and it's a keeper.

There is a new coffee table book out on Harvard Square entitled Harvard Square, An Illustrated History Since 1950. This is author Mo Lotman’s first book and it’s a keeper.

I picked up a copy on Friday afternoon and I found I just couldn’t put it down.

My own Harvard Square experience dates back over 25 years to 1983. I had come to Cambridge to visit my brother, a freshman at Harvard. I would return in 1985 to begin my own journey through Harvard College – and Harvard Square.

It was interesting to retrace in this book the history of the Square since that time. However, even more interesting for me was to see the photos and read about the history of Harvard Square in the 1950s, 60s, 70s & early 1980s.

There is more to the history of Harvard Square than is found in the covers of this book. However, there is enough here to give one a good sense of the history of the place over the last 60 years.

Some of my fondest Harvard Square memories include…

Walking to the Tasty at 2 AM after finishing a paper and finding good coffee and good company.

Sitting down to breakfast at The Greenhouse Cafe early on Sunday mornings before the Sunday brunch rush and being treated like royalty by the warm-hearted wait-staff.

Seeing countless films at the Brattle, beginning with I Know Where I’m Going. I’ll never forget the night there were over two hundred lined up outside and around the corner to see the film adaptation of William Faulkner’s novel Sanctuary.

Working at Wordsworth Bookstore: the long line which would spring up at the cash register…Bruce at the information desk…vacuuming after closing.

Cafe Algiers down under, before the 1990 renovation: a table outside, waiting to use the small bathroom, talking.

Faulkner tutorial at Cafe Pamplona in the blue haze of smoke from neighboring tables

Buying concert tickets at Out Of Town News…for Pink Floyd at Foxborough

Passing through the Square on my Vespa….many times on many different Vespas:)

Standing in line on the sidewalk outside the gates to the Yard in a tux for the 350th Harvard celebration…

Crossing the Square after a heavenly winter snow storm with cars few and far between and the silence almost palpable…

Seeing Joe Williams perform live at the Regatta Bar…

Browsing for books at McIntrye and Moore…

Dancing downstairs at Henry IV…

Of course, as a real estate broker it’s great to be located in the absolute heart of Harvard Square. My desk is right behind the Brattle Movie Theatre!
