Luxury Single Family Residence Near Harvard University on Professor’s Row: 63 Francis Avenue

By charles-cherney • May 20th, 2010

63 Francis is near the Harvard Divinity School.

63 Francis Avenue is a single family residence near Harvard University. Now under renovation, the residence in short order will be one of the finest luxury single family offerings in Cambridge.

Francis Avenue is an L-shaped street which begins at Kirkland Street. The Nieman Foundation at Harvard is located at this corner, and the Harvard Divinity School is located further down the avenue. Often referred to as “Professor’s Row,” Francis Avenue is a lovely tree-lined residential street with many beautiful and substantial homes.

A strong argument can be made for 63 Francis Avenue being the premiere residence on Francis Avenue. 63 Francis Avenue is a stucco Tudor Gable single family on a larger lot situated on the more private and secluded end of Francis Avenue beyond the Harvard Divinity School. Originally built in 1913, the house is set back from the street and rests on a small rise in the land, which creates an understated but felt presence for the home. The substantial trees found on the property and nearby – including the many trees on the land belonging to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences – create a true estate-like feeling at 63 Francis Avenue. I almost feel as if I have travelled to the countryside when visiting this quiet oasis in the heart of the city. Truly, an enchanting setting.|

63 Francis Avenue is now being renovated by Copley Design & Development of Cambridge. Most recently, Copley renovated a multi-million dollar home on Lakeview Avenue in West Cambridge. Copley’s whole-house renovation at 63 Francis Avenue includes a new addition on the rear of the house, making this grand home even grander. Copley CEO Merek Franklin indicates that renovations at 63 Francis Avenue are scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2010. It is reported that the newly reborn luxury residence at 63 Francis Avenue will feature

- 6,900  +/- square feet of LUXURY living space

- Living Room with  coffered ceiling and wood-burning fireplace

- Formal dining room & study, both with direct access to terrace and secluded garden

- Five bedrooms including an expansive master bedroom suite with fireplace

- 5 full baths & 2 half baths

- Cook’s kitchen featuring Sub-Zero & Wolf appliances and butler pantry

- Au-pair quarters with separate bath & entrance

- Five-zone central heat & hydro-air environmental controls

- Oversized free-standing garage plus additional off street parking for 4+ cars

- Substantial landscaped grounds

- Private movie theater room with state-of-the-art screen and sound system

- Wine cellar

I had the opportunity to walk through 63 Francis Avenue earlier this week with the developer and lead architect and even now the residence is breathtaking. There is something about this place which sets it apart from any other home I have seen in my ten plus years as a top broker in Cambridge. The house will be an absolute show-stopper when renovations are completed. Even now, it is majestic.

Charles, I am so glad to have found your blog and to learn from it about residences like 63 Francis Avenue, which I gather will be in the $4,000,000+ range based on your blog post. It is refreshing to find an experienced and eloquent real estate broker with a Harvard background. As it happens, your blog post on 63 Francis Avenue was found by several other partners at my firm this afternoon as well and I wouldn’t be surprised if you hear from one of us soon. Looks like a great house.

I drove by this house after reading your blog post and it was a hive of activity. I did not realize that Francis Avenue turned the corner and I was pleasantly surprised by this setting. It’s everything you suggested it to be and more. I really like the house and will follow its full renovation to completion with interest. Thank you for noting it.
